Perhaps the most important singer, interpreter, and proponent of Appalachian traditions since Bascom Lamar Lunsford (), she had been part of the American.

Jean Ruth Ritchie (December 8, – June 1, ) was an American folk singer, songwriter, and Appalachian dulcimer player, called by some the "Mother of Folk". In her youth she learned hundreds of folk songs in the traditional way (orally, from her family and community), many of which were Appalachian variants of centuries old British and Irish songs, including dozens of Child Ballads.

  3. If you are looking for a CD where Jean Ritchie puts the most dulcimer tunes onto a disc, this is it. As she explains in the liner notes, many of her albums over the last 50 yrs or so have had 90% cuts with solo voice, guitar, etc., ANYthing but Appalachian dulcimer/5(5).
